It took an unusual discovery in Africa to turn diamonds into a more affordable gift. In 1866 a boy named Erasmus Jacob found an interesting looking pebble on the banks of the Orange River in South Africa. He gave the pebble to his father, who sold it. The buyer resold it and eventually someone realized it was a diamond. Three years later another diamond was found in the same area under similar circumstances. The second diamond eventually sold in London for 25,000 pounds and the search for diamonds began in the area in earnest.  In 1871 an 83.5 carat stone was found on property belonging to two brothers called De Beers by a cook working for a prospecting party and the Kimberly diamond deposits had been
